Igniting Girls' Interest in Science

"Through anecdotal research and a compilation of data, Professors Sheryl Tucker and Deborah Hanuscin found that 81 percent of the girls who participated in the Magic of Chemistry professed an interest in learning more about science and the related careers. More than 40 percent of girls attended the workshops multiple times. Moreover, the outcomes of the workshops reflected the program's goal of teaching girls about science and its relevance in their daily lives."

MoC Co-coordinator honored for work

Janet Stoops received the August 2007 MU Service Champion Award from the Staff Advisory Council for her work with the MoC program. The nomination by Professor Sheryl Tucker reflects Janet's dedication to MU and its mission both on and off the clock. In it she says "The University's mission statement asserts that, 'Through its outreach programs, MU meets selected educational and informational needs of Missouri citizens throughout the state,' and Janet is directly involved in such efforts." Janet volunteers for the nationally recognized Magic of Chemistry outreach project designed to ignite girls' interest in science at an age where national studies indicate such curiosity disappears. She has served as program co-coordinator since the fall of 2003 and has been instrumental in all aspects of the program from designing experiments, to purchasing supplies to training volunteers, to leading workshop stations, to handling problems. Janet Stoops is dedicated to programs that positively showcase the University to our Missouri community.
